Together We Are Proud!

An online cabaret for LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

All too often, Pride events are inaccessible - to audiences and artists alike.

That’s why Turning Worm Joint-Artistic Director, Marcella Rick, was buzzing to produce this event, in collaboration with Together! 2012 CIC.

This virtual cabaret featured a line up of exclusively young, queer, disabled artists. It was also live-captioned, with integrated audio description throughout. Hosting our cabaret online meant that we could celebrate Pride with so many people who might face physical or sensory barriers to attending in-person events.

Accessibility for audiences

We developed this event as free-to-attend, removing any financial barriers that we could.

We also distributed an easy-read guide ahead of the cabaret, detailing all accessibility measures integrated into the event.

These include:

  • Keeping the event to 1 hour or less

  • Providing a social script for audiences, detailing the timings of performances, and what they could expect from the hosting of the event

  • Integrated audio description, alongside live BSL interpretation and captions

Accessibility for artists

At Turning Worm, we know that accessibility is neccesary for everyone - artists, audiences, and team members alike.

To make this opportunity accessible for our artists, we ensured:

  • All artists were paid

  • Our definition of ‘young artists’ encompased those up to 30 years old

  • All artists had a range of experiences - we chose them for their work, not the length of their credits
